The characteristics and value of chlorinated rubber

Chlorinated rubber is a high-molecular material made by chlorination modification of natural rubber or synthetic rubber. The 27%-67% chlorine content in its molecular structure endows it with unique properties: excellent chemical resistance (resistant to acids, alkalis, salt spray and most organic solvents), flame retardancy (with an oxygen index of over 30), as well as outstanding adhesion and film-forming properties. These properties make it an irreplaceable functional material in the industrial field.

 ‌   Diversified application scenarios

1. In the field of anti-corrosion coatings: As the core film-forming substance of ship paint and container coatings, chlorinated rubber coatings can effectively resist seawater corrosion. In 2024, the market size of Marine coatings in Chinawill reach 8.5 billion yuan, among which chlorinated rubber types account for more than 40%.

2. Adhesive industry: It is used to manufacture acid and alkali resistant sealants, especially suitable for the joint treatment of chemical pipelines.

3. Printing ink: Its fast-drying property increases the efficiency of packaging printing by 30%.

4. Military application: As a flame retardant component for incense-burning bombs, it meets special protective requirements.

Environmental protection challenges and technological innovations

With the restrictions on chlorine-containing materials imposed by the EU REACH regulation, Chinese research institutions have developed environmentally friendly chlorination processes. In 2023, the Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology and Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, developed the "gas-solid phase chlorination method", which reduced wastewater discharge by 92%. In thefuture, through molecular structure modification and composite technology, chlorinated rubber is expected to achieve breakthroughs in cutting-edge fields such as 5G equipment sealing and spacecraft heat insulation coatings. This material, which was born in the 1930s, is continuously serving modern industry with new technological connotations.
